What is it?

Immersive Reader is a free OneNote Accessibility tool that can be used to improve reading skills for all age groups.

 

What is its purpose?

It is an aid for instructors to support their learners with different abilities and encourage independent reading through increasing fluency for English language learners or readers of other languages.  It offers text-decoding solutions for students with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia.

 

How do I use it?

It is a free Microsoft 365 Office tool which can be used with the Microsoft Office apps such as Microsoft Teams, OneNote, Outlook, Word, Office Lens for iPhone and iPad (IOS), Microsoft Edge Browser.

To start using Immersive Reader, go to one of your Word documents and click View. You will access  Immersive Reader embedded in your Word document. 

Note: Please update your Microsoft Office to the latest version to use Immersive Reader.

 

Why would I use it?

Immersive Reader has a variety of features, such as enhanced dictation that improves authoring text and focus mode that helps sustain attention and improves the reading speed. You can also adjust the font spacing and shorten the lines to avoid “visual crowding” for learners with special needs. You can highlight parts of speech in different colours and use the syllabification feature to improve word recognition.

 

Usage considerations

The latest version of Microsoft Office is required to use Immersive Reader.
