Memorial University is committed to providing opportunities for the professional development of its graduate students beyond the knowledge and skills gained within the disciplines. Because graduate students are engaged in teaching and many will pursue an academic career, the Teaching Skills Enhancement Program (TSEP) is designed to provide an introduction to teaching at the undergraduate level.
The program is offered to graduate students over two semesters, and will run remotely during the 2022-23 academic year. The fall semester is delivered in a blended format with online content and weekly synchronous, team-based discussions every Thursday, 10-11:30 a.m. (NST). During the winter (January-March), graduate students undertake a teaching apprenticeship and complete a learning portfolio, with four synchronous sessions scheduled throughout the semester.
The program is free of charge, and graduate students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate of completion and official transcript notation.
The TSEP has been revamped to better meet the needs of graduate students and align with Memorial's strategic priorities. Changes to the program include:
- A focus on Indigenization in collaboration with Memorial’s Indigenous Education Specialist Kelly Anne Butler
- Increased focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Increased focus on practical teaching skills and interactive activities
- Invited guest speakers from across the university - experienced faculty members will share their own teaching strategies and activities with graduate students
- Flexible online content that allows Memorial students to complete the program from anywhere in the world
- Peer review assignments through Peer Scholar that allow students to give one another feedback on the development of teaching resources throughout the program, including a Syllabus, Statement of Teaching Philosophy, and Teaching Dossier
The goals of the TSEP are to:
- Foster student and faculty engagement through effective teaching
- Build confidence and capacity in teaching abilities
- Introduce theories related to adult learning and teaching in higher education and how they can benefit your teaching
- Stimulate dialogue within a community of other novice teachers, and foster individual reflection about student engagement and effective teaching
- Provide support for participants as they undertake their teaching activities
- Provide opportunities to develop teaching skills
- Familiarize graduate students with the challenges and rewards of teaching
